Matthew McConaughey spent a period of his career mainly focused on fluffy romantic comedies like Failure To Launch or How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, and while they were successful, they didn't do much to stretch his acting muscles. Its a damn shame they didn't win the big awards for their characters, as these were some well fleshed out character arcs that you rarely get to witness in film or tv. Woody and Matthew transform themselves throughout the duration of the 8 episodes, going from one spectrum of the process to the other whilst showing real finesse in acting. These characters are not amazing human beings and have flaws, and it makes for some really interesting viewing.
In the case of this season, we get to see almost a fly on the wall analysis of how detectives might work and how their lives are. Usually cop dramas focus mainly on the case or focus on the character(s). Its also a show with so much metaphors and themes, with real character growth and story progression.
Watching it feels like reading an excellent novel, with each episode filled to the brim of importance and not being there for filler purposes. That famous continuous shot during a gunfight is just some of the innovations and risks the season took, and it proved to be a main reason why this season is looked back on so fondly. Some of the show's best scenes are elevated because of the way he directs them, bringing a cold and earthy feel to the proceedings. The way he brought the dark and dreary atmosphere within the swamp atmosphere of Louisiana is just stunning. Not only was the show incredibly written and acted, but it had some incredible direction from Cary Joji Fukunaga.
